PhD Student – Immunopathology of Malaria during pregnancy
The Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (CRESIB) is a global health research institute developed from some of the leading academic and biomedical research institutions in Barcelona, together with the Catalan Government, as a response to emerging international health challenges.
CRESIB was founded in July 2006 by the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (HCB) and the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS). The centre is located in a privileged scientific environment, alongside the HCB, IDIBAPS and the Campus of the Facultat de Medicina-Clínic August Pi i Sunyer of the UB.

CRESIB is seeking an enthusiastic, organized and autonomous PhD student who is interested in applying for a grant to work on the Immunopathology of Malaria during pregnancy.
To develop a PhD in the context of a project entitled “Role of immune-endocrine factors during pregnancy on the susceptibility to malaria and mother-infant health at delivery”. This project has recently been funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Spain). In order to improve malaria treatment during pregnancy and design new prophylactic strategies, this project aims to study the role of maternal immune-endocrine factors in the susceptibility of pregnant women to Plasmodium falciparum. To achieve this, we aim to determine humoral and cellular immunity (malaria specific and general) and levels of hormones in different time-points during pregnancy of 530 Mozambican women exposed to malaria, and to evaluate their association with indicators of maternal/infant health at delivery.
Main duties/ responsibilities:
Apply for grants to obtain PhD funding.

Travel to Mozambique to supervise the recruitment of pregnant women and laboratory work in the Centro en Investigaçao em Saúde da Manhiça, and to contribute to capacity building of Mozambican researchers.
